Is trading a scam? How to tell if a platform is legit
Trading is not a scam in itself, but it is a high-risk activity that attracts a lot of fraud. Trust depends on the platform: who the company is, which regulator oversees it and whether the withdrawal rules are clear.
Is trading a scam?
No: trading assets is a legitimate activity, but losing money trading is not the same as falling for a scam. Losses are part of market risk. A scam is when the platform or whoever promotes it deceives you: blocks withdrawals for no reason, manipulates results, promises guaranteed profits or disappears with deposits.
That is why the right question is not whether trading is legit, but whether that platform and that offer are legit.

VIEW COMPARISONHow to tell if a trading platform is legit?
Check five things before depositing: the operating company, the regulator, the withdrawal policy, the published terms and the complaint history.
- Company and address: are the legal name and country of registration shown in the footer or the terms?
- Regulator: does the platform name a specific authority (and not just "international regulation")? Check the license number on the regulator's own website.
- Withdrawals: are processing times, fees, minimum amount and verification requirements published?
- Terms and risks: are the user agreement, privacy policy and risk warning easy to find?
- Complaints: search the platform's name with "withdrawal" and "complaint" and see whether there is a pattern of unresolved problems.
In our comparison, each platform lists its operating company and regulatory status with a link to the official source.
Warning signs of a trading scam
- Promises of guaranteed profit, "passive income" or a fixed win rate.
- Pressure to deposit quickly or "limited spots".
- Requests for a deposit to release a withdrawal (a "release fee").
- Contact via WhatsApp or Telegram from "account managers" who trade for you.
- A website with no legal company name, no address and no published terms.
- Use of celebrity names or government agencies in ads.
If you spot any of these signs, do not deposit. In Brazil, you can check the CVM (Brazil's securities regulator) alerts and file complaints on the agency's website; elsewhere, check your local regulator.
Are offshore platforms legit?
Offshore registration is not, by itself, a sign of a scam, but it does mean less protection for the customer. The six platforms in our comparison are registered in jurisdictions such as Nevis, Vanuatu, Costa Rica and Cyprus, and none of them cites, in its public documents, authorization from a Brazilian regulator. In practice, if there is a withdrawal problem, you will have little or no local recourse.
This does not rule out using them, but it calls for extra caution: small deposits, an early test withdrawal and a careful reading of the terms.
How to protect yourself in practice?
- Start with the demo account and only then deposit the minimum amount.
- Make a test withdrawal early on to learn the process.
- Use payment methods in your own name and keep receipts.
- Never share passwords or verification codes with anyone.
- Do not accept bonuses without reading the volume rules for withdrawals.
- Set a daily loss limit and stick to it.
Frequently asked questions
Is trading safe?
No form of trading is risk-free. Safety depends on choosing a transparent platform and limiting how much you risk. You can lose the entire amount you deposit.
How can I tell if a trading platform is a scam?
Be wary of promises of guaranteed profits, requests for a deposit to release a withdrawal, a missing legal company name and terms, and contact from "account managers" on messaging apps. Check the license on the named regulator's website.
Are the platforms in the comparison regulated in Brazil?
In the public documents we reviewed, none of the six platforms cites authorization from a Brazilian regulator. All are registered abroad. See the details and sources on each platform's page.
